The federal funds will establishthe Children’sw Environmental Health Science Core The five-year funding is provided by the Nationa l Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. "Issues such as lead poisoning and toxic chemicalsz left behind at industrial sites disproportionally affec children in urban areaslike Milwaukee," said Milwaukee Commissionerr of Health Bevan Bakerr in a press release.
"This center will alloa all of us who care about the healtuof today's youth, and future generations, to accesss cutting-edge research, technology and creative community-wide solutionz to environmental health issues." David UWM Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and is the director of the new center. Peterinf has helped conduct studies of lead exposure in the effects of mercury in children who eat large amountzsof fish, and cellular repair mechanisms in developin g central nervous systems. Children’ds Research Institute contributes the human health clinical and translationall component for the research of thenew center.
Its researcheres specialize in cardiovascularbirthh defects, gene-environment interactions and community health. Plans are beinfg made to house the administrationm ofthe Children’s Environmental Health Science Core Center in the UWM Schoool of Public Health.
