Wal-Mart to hire 22,000 - Kansas City Business Journal:
Wal-Mart's announcement came on a day the government releasexd mildly encouraging weekly unemployment But it also hit as the retaiol industry reported some overallpdismal results, with same store sales figures fallingv an average of 4.8 percent for May. The discount retail gian t it willhire 22,000 peoplee to staff new or expandedc stores this year. "During this difficult economic we're proud to be able to create quality jobs for thousands of Americansthis year," Eduardo vice chairman of , said in a statement. But even Wal-Mart isn’r hiring at the same pace it has in the The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer added 33,000 jobs in the U.S.
last Still, Wal-Mart’s low prices on everything from food to electronicse have allowed it to gain markeft share and have kept it positioned asthe nation’a number one retailer. Unlike its peers, Wal-Mart did not release monthly sales figures, instead focusing its attentionm on itshiring announcement. Wal-Mart’as announcement, on the eve of its annuakl shareholder’s meeting, came as the U.S. Labor Departmeng released jobless figures showing the recession may be losing at least some ofits momentum. Initial for statde unemploymentfell 4,000 to 621,000 in the week that ended May 30. That’se the third straight week fewer workers filednew claims.
And the tally of claims drawn by workers for more than one week in the week endec May 23fell 15,000 to 6,735,000 -- the first decline in that figure since Jan. 3. But that news isn’t exactlu good. It’s just less bad than other and experts expectto come. Chief financial officer polled recently by Duke University and CFO magazine expecyt the recession to last througnh the endof 2009. CFOs in the U.S. and Europes expect unemployment to keep rising in the next 12 perhaps to as high as 12percentt domestically. Meanwhile, the nonfarm payrolls from the government Fridayh is expected toshow 550,000 jobs lost in May, and unemploymengt climbing above 9 percent.
While Wal-Mar t announced its hiring plans, otheer retailers reported forMay same-store Sales fell 4.8 percent at the 30 retailers trackesd by Thomson Reuters. Sales fell 6.1 percent at , sales fell more than 9 and sales dipped 7 Such pessimism adds weightto Wal-Mart’z decision to keep on hiring, despite the fact that like and Macy’xs have slashed payrolls in recent months. Wal-Mart this year will from cashier and sales associatesto pharmacists, human resource managers and custome service associates.
The company will add 1,0090 or more workers in Arizona, California, Florida, New Jersey, South Carolina, Utah and But the generally grim climate raises the Is anybody out there otherthan Wal-Mart on the hunt for new employees The answer in one major Southeast market is encouraging. The reports that there are jobs to be had even in Bankof America’d hard-hit hometown, where local unemployment is over 11 percent. You just have to know wherer to look. “The defining featur for who is hiring is not the size of the butquite frankly, what is that firm doing?” N.C. State economis Mike Walden told thebusinesx journal.
Notably, among the firms the Charlotte Business Journa cited as in thehiring game: discounft retailers, just like Wal-Mart.

California Treasurer
Analyst Martin Weiss of said in a June 22 report that California’s financial woes create “aq very high probability” that Californiw will eventually miss debt service payments. “Mr. Weiss’ analysis and to put it kindly, is misinformed,” respondeed Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for state TreasurerfBill Lockyer. “Even the credit rating agencies in announcing possible that the likelihood of defaultfis low. “We can’t stress it stronglty enough.
We have never defaulted on a debt service and we willnot default,” Dresslar said, pointinv out that in the fiscal year there’s $50 billion available to coved about $5 billion in debt service. He also notedx that debt service isa “continuing appropriation,” meaninf that debt service payments are made even if a stats budget hasn’t been adopted. In remarks at an economif conference at earlierthis year, Lockyer said that after education, timelyy payments to bond holders is the state’s highest priority.
The stronf remarks from the treasurer and his officr underscore the steep price Californiqa would likely have to pay in the capital markets for years if it wereto “It’s a situation to be avoided at all Dresslar said. “Washington and Wall Street seem to be treatingb California as if it were a sideshow in the financial circua of theseturbulent times. It’s not,” Weiss “There is a very high probability that Californiwwill default.” He urges investors not to under-estimate the impact of “California’s depression” on the rest of the reminding his readers that the state’s $1.8 trillioj economy is larger than that of Brazil, Canada or India. Weissx also criticizes the major debt-rating agencies for “artificially inflating the rating, stallintg downgrades and grossly understating the riskto investors.
” Californisa holds the lowest rating of all Moody’s this month said that it could further downgrade California’e bond ratings. Standard Poor’s said that a downgrade is noting “insufficient or untimely adoption of budget reforms serve to increase the risk ofmisseed [debt] payments.” Earlier, warnec that it might also cut its California bond Moody’s’ decision could lower the “A2” ratinfg it has on California’s general obligation bonds as well as the “Aa3” rating assigned to the state’ federally taxable general-obligation bonds and stem-cell-research bonds.
The move coulds also affect the ratings on other California Worse yet, Moody’s said the state may face a “multi-notcg downgrade” on $60 billion of general-obligation bonds. “Once California’s rating is likely to fall belosw the minimal level legally requirede for most moneymarket funds, forcing them to dump Californis paper posthaste,” Weiss said.

Engineering firm expects turnaround in fourth quarter - San Antonio Business Journal:
The full-service engineering and design firm has grown froma two-mahn shop in 1999 to a statewide, multimillion-dollar businesws employing 60 people. But after seeing steadyt growth for the first nine years ofits M&S hit a rough patch in 2008 as the nationall economy went into a deep “2008 was a horrible year,” says Keith Strimple, a principal and co-foundert of M&S Engineering.
“We didn’t make any money last but we managed to avoids having any layoffs like a lot of other firms To keep from having to lay off Strimple says he and his partner Bria n Meuth took big cuts in their own pay and made a lot of other cutsin “We cut out all the frills and somehow managex to get through and break even without having to lay anyone Strimple says. “It is truly by the grace of God that we are still here.” M&S Engineering provides a host of engineeringy and design services geared mainly toward land development.
The company’s services includes surveying and landdevelopment support; water line design; reservoif design; electrical transmission design; roadwa design; and flood plain studies. M&wS Engineering relies heavily on newresidentiao construction. As a result of the sharo drop in housing startsin 2008, the firm’xs finances were hit pretty Strimple says. Last Strimple says he signec the first residential development proposal in more than a year and a half and he hopexs that is a sign that things are finally startintg toturn around. “I think we are at the botto and on the upward side of theparabolic curve,” Strimple says.
“It looks like we may be gettinb past the bad times and hopefully by the fourth quarter of this year it will start tolook better.” Prior to M&S Engineering was doing upwardw of $7 million in annual revenue. Company officials declined to reveal 2008revenuse figures. Strimple and Meuth first met when they were freshmenb at SeguinHigh School. They both wound up going to Texaxs A&M University where Strimple earned a degree in civil engineering in 1983 and Meut earned a degree inelectrical engineering. Both also went on to earn theird MBAs.
Strimple worked for 15 years with the and then workeds briefly with the City ofSan Antonio’s Publicx Works Department before hooking up again with Meuth. Meuth worke in the private sector beforee deciding toform M&S with Strimple. Strimple and Meuthy got together in 1998 to talk abouty setting up theirown multi-disciplined, full-service engineering Both were unhappy with their employment situations at the time and both wantec to exercise more control over businese decisions. “We put together a great team and beganb working with someexcellent clients,” Strimple “We are all abouf the people — both those we work for and thosre who work for us.
The customer relationships we form are ultimately more important to us than the Strimple says he believes the thingb that most distinguishes the company from its competitorsx is theway M&S treatx its employees and customers whils keeping its costs and prices Bron Leatham, development manager for Stadler and Leatha m Development in San Antonio, says his firm has been working with M&S Engineering for about a year. Leathamj says he is very happy with the quality ofthe company’s work. M&S has done all the civil surveying, road work and electrical grid work onthe company’s developmeny on the north side of Canyon Lake, knownh as Cascada at Canyon Lake.
Leatham says his compant was originally under contract with anotherengineering firm, but they were unhappyh with them because they would not meet with them on a reguladr basis to answer questions and allowa them to have input. Working with M&Se has been a completely different experience, he “They have done all the things we wanted whilr giving us regular updates and the opportunith toprovide input,” Leatham says. “That, plus they were abougt 30 percent cheaper.” Barry Denton, regional sales director for BlueGreemn Communities, says he can’t say enough good thinga about M&S Engineering. Blue Green has worked with M&S for the past several years.
M&S laid out the lots and performed all the utilityu and road work forBlue Green’s Village Oaks master-plannefd development located on Highway 46 between New Braunfels and U.S. Highwaty 281. “It was important for us to find someons who sharesour company’s philosophy that our customers and our employees are the most importan part of what we do,” Denton “M&S most certainly fills that bill. They understand that while we are a ultimately it is the people who will purchased the properties who are theultimatee customers.
” Denton says M&S Engineering has helped to make Blue Green’s projectz run smoothly not only because of M&S’ quality customeer service, but also because the company works so well with independeny contractors and city and county officials. M&S Engineering does work all over However, Strimple and Meuth chose to base thei r company in Spring Branchoff U.S. Highway 281. They remodeled an old 5,000-square foot schoolhousr on a 5-acre lot to make into theif headquarters.
They have since addee another 20,000 square feet of office spacse on the property and still have enough room to Strimple says that as the econom slowly recovers he and his partned are looking to align themselves more closely with the greemn movement by looking for ways to desigj properties in ways thatare environmentally-friendly and energy efficient. “Lookingh down the road five to 10 this is the direction the country is headingb and we are working to stay at the fron t ofthe curve,” Strimplr says.

Trancos chases customers, not just eyeballs - Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal:
The Redwood City-based advertising firm has reinvented itsel from what started out in 1999 as a lotterg and gaming web site to an advertisingtcompany that’s based around the idea that companies pay for something tangible, like when a customer expresses interesyt in their product. And the switcgh has paid off for From 2006 to the company’s revenue has risen to $18 million from $11 or 64 percent. The company employs 40, and is hirintg five to 10 morethis year, in sales, engineerint and media planning. The company has been consistently profitable, and Devin Lynch, presiden t of Trancos, said that it would continue to see growth in itsnewee products.
Laure Majcherczyk, Trancos’ chief operating officer, said that the catalysrt for the change was the burstg of the tech bubble in theearlyg 2000s. Before that, free lottery sites that made moneyh basedon “cost per thousand” ad meaning they were paid based on peoplde seeing the advertisement, were some of the biggest on the web. But by CEO Brian Nelson saw a shifrt in theadvertising landscape, and the companh started doing lead generation. Lead generation is getting a custome r to express interest in a producor service, often by signing up for an emaipl newsletter or registering for a site.
Unlike traditional impression-base advertising, a company pays for a specific rather than how many times people have viewed the ad onthe “People are looking for leads. They want to know wherwe their dollars arecoming from,” said Lynch. It’as a good time to be offerinhg extra value inonline advertising. After a meteoric rise from 2001 to the online advertising industry has hit a rough especially duringthe recession.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau an organization that represents 375 mediz andtechnology companies, which together sell 86 percent of the onlines advertising in the United States, reported that during the firstt quarter of this online ad revenue dropped 5 percent from the same perioe in 2008, to $5.5 billion. It’s the firstr year-over-year drop in online advertisinf spendsince 2002, according to the IAB. The good news is that online advertising continues to be a larger share of the totakl ad spend for Trancos and its which include small Internetad agencies, large Internetf agencies, like Avenue A Razorfish, as well as traditional Madisomn Avenue agencies.
Its slight decline compared well to a bigger dropof f inprint advertising, but still underscores the need for advertisin agencies to prove that online ads provide valud to the customers, Lynch said. “Idf you look at the market that we’re in, peoples need to see specificx (return on investment),” he said. “zA lot of the other methods, theree was no clear ROI.” Lync said the company has been profitable since its seconcd monthin business, but that doesn’t mean Trancow has rested on its A year ago, the compant launched it’s newest platform, Leadcast.com, whic h is phone-verified lead generation.
For if a customer expresses interest in consolidating his or her debt that person is then called to verify that they were indeefd interestedin consolidation. Then the lead gets generated to and various companies bidon it. Since launchinf Leadcast.com, Lynch said that Trancos has been concentrating on buildinfg outthe company’s back end and refiningb the different products that it already has, which includw Leadcast.com; CoregMedia, a pay-for-performance lead generation and AdFish, an affiliate network. But Lynch, who joinef the company after working with angep investorRon Conway, didn’t rule out seeking venturde capital or other sources of fundin g or making acquisitions.
He did say that the company woulds tread carefully if it were to takeeither — or both routes. “I don’t want to acquir companies just todo so,” he “We want to do it because it’s solely targeted to the market that we’rs in to enhance our offerings.”

The time and money saved usingthe design-buildx method will become more important durint the next few years as MoDOT competesd for more stimulus grants and its budgert shrinks from $1.2 billion this year to $500 million by 2012. Lee Ann district planning managerwith MoDOT, said the agencg plans to compete for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds throughg the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recover grants. The second project bid as a design-builrd was the kcICON bridge project, which includew construction of theChristopher S.

The final project was the statewidedSafe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program, which will improve 802 of the city’sz lowest-rated bridges during the next five LeMaster said the design-build method allowzs construction teams to close bridges for 45 days insteads of the usual 90 days, and she said the projectg will finish in five yearxs rather than seven.
Kell said the success of the thre e projects led tothe bill’e passing. “We feel we’ve got a betted value all the way around,” she
